Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rogers were writing the musical South Pacific when they reached a melody/lyrics block. They took the day off to hear a choir perform musical material written by Gregorian monks. Oscar and Richard felt the hour was wasted because this group lacked talent and energy: their timing was rocky, their voices were unsuitable to the ups and downs of the notes, and altogether it was some uneven chanting.
That’s awful. I love it!
